“Father and Son” is a figurative art painting that recently caught our attention when the artist, Teresa Brutcher, shared that it was both shortlisted for the FIKVA international art competition and acquired by the Neeraj Batra collection.

We asked Teresa to tell us more about her work:

“‘Father and Son’ is part of a series about relationships and their changing nature,” she said. “As we evolve, so do they. Children become caregivers mothering their mothers and fathers, providing the same emotional nurturing that was once provided to them.

“This piece is particularly important to me because the figures are my spouse and our son. But they could be thousands of fathers and sons bound by the same deep love and respect forged throughout the years of loving, learning, struggling, and growing together.

“Father and son are wearing identical garments – white T-shirts and jeans; offspring so often become much like the very parent they pulled away from so desperately during the ‘difficult’ years.

“The atmosphere is somber except for the few jumping jacks shrouded in the background shadows, a mere remnant from the past of the child long gone – indeed somber, as the business of growing old is a serious one.”
