How to paint flowers in pastel

Pastelist Lyn Diefenbach is often asked how she creates such realistic flowers. One of her secrets is a technique for painting dew drops, which she demonstrates in this free Art School Live video with Eric Rhoads.

She begins the demo by starting with a simplified explanation of creating a shadow, then addresses the light and how it travels through the dew drop so you can recreate it on your canvas.

“Dew drops come in many shapes and forms,” Lyn said, adding that the shadow you create will determine what the shape is in regard to length and depth.

If you don’t paint with pastels, no worries – Lyn said that this technique applies to all media because, in the end, you’re “chasing values.”
