“The refugee crisis in Syria has exploded since the outbreak of the war and the subject of this painting is an old lady who had lived her whole life in Syria but now lives in a tent in a refugee camp in Turkey.

“She is devastated by the crisis that she has been pushed into and bewildered and shocked. I wanted to show this shock in the painting as the shadows of soldiers loomed nearby, ever-present.”
