portrait oil painting of a man looking off in the distance
Shawn Michael Warren, Enlightenment, 40 x 30 in., oil on linen, 2022.

What is the most interesting thing you have painted/sculpted and why?
Shawn Michael Warren: I would have to say that my allegory, “In a Promised Land” stands as the most interesting subject I’ve covered. It was the first time I ventured into narrative painting, as well as depicting death and destruction in my work. The piece covers the story of a very dark event in American history that most were unfamiliar with at the time of its creation. Since then, the event has grown exponentially in popularity within the last several years, via documentaries and two critically acclaimed television series.

What is the best thing about being an artist?
Shawn Michael Warren: It’s simply the ability to tell stories in a way that words cannot. It is one of the greatest mediums that can give a voice to the voiceless, spark difficult conversations, bridge cultures, uplift and educate the masses.
