Favorite Moments in Realism from Watercolor Live 2024

The 4th Annual Watercolor Live came to an end Friday, January 26th, wrapping up with even more of today’s best watercolor artists sharing all of their secrets, explaining their materials, methods, and more.

The next Live event is March 6-8, 2024, with Plein Air Live. Join us then to be with fellow painters online for days of demonstrations, Q&A with your favorite artists, mingling during the breakout rooms and cocktail hours, and the incredible faculty painting auction.

In case you missed it, here are some of our favorite moments from Watercolor Live:

We followed along as Pam Wenger created a “quick sketch portrait” during the popular “Essential Techniques Day.” For this practice, she says, “You don’t have to finish, you don’t have to overwork it, you don’t have to worry about the composition or the background or the clothing – it’s a chance for you to play with color and approaches.”

“Essentials Day was fabulous! Learned so much relating to transitions and edges- color mixing and so much more! ❤️❤️❤️” ~ Debbie A.

Speaking over a high-speed video of his painting process, Frank Spino’s inspiring demo was of a realistic still life of fruit in a crystal bowl. He explained how he chose his colors, why he was making certain decisions, and how he became a better painter (and how you can, too).

Painting in the style of tight realism, Lana Privitera used a limited palette with a wide range of values. She said she takes hundreds of reference photos as she chooses her composition, even reversing the images in Photoshop to see if it reveals a new possibility.
